Baystate Health, western Massachusetts’s premier healthcare provider, and home to Baystate Medical Center (BMC) is looking for a Lactation Consultant!

The Lactation Consultant (Certified or Certification eligible) is an engaged employee who is responsible for providing care specific to lactating/breastfeeding patients and acts in cooperation with the Nurse Lactation Consultant as a resource to the multidisciplinary team (CLC's, nurses, physicians, social workers, educators, etc) The consultant performs assessments on inpatients who are referred for individual breastfeeding consultations and/or teaching on the labor, postpartum, pediatric or neonatal units. The consultant provides outpatient care with oversight/collaboration with the Nurse Lactation Consultant. The consultant is responsible for promoting breastfeeding and is knowledgeable about the breastfeeding mother/baby dyad, anatomy and physiology, and clinical breastfeeding issues. Candidate must have strong assessment skills and be able to plan, implement and evaluate a feeding plan that supports the mother's goals. The Lactation Consultant (non-nursing) provides ongoing support to our community of new families beyond the birth of the baby.

The Lactation Consultant has ILBCLC Certification or will obtain it within 12 months of hire/transfer/promotion.

Adheres to system and department compliance policies, and any and all applicable laws and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

1) Performs assessments on inpatients who are referred for individual breastfeeding consultations and/or teaching plans, implements and evaluates individual breastfeeding education based on patient assessment and plan of care. Teaches patient and significant others about breastfeeding self- management. Documents all aspects of breastfeeding education. Assesses outpatients with oversight/collaboration with Nurse Lactation Consultants.

2) Develops and maintains good human relation skills, which are consistent with the principles of the hospital, with patients and their significant others, medical staff, and other employees

3) Employee participates in self development and educational activities. Maintains skills and is aware of current information through journals and conferences, as evidenced through attendance records.

4) Provides education to multidisciplinary team and breastfeeding support to employees as requested and/or needed.

5) Provides ongoing support and education to new families beyond the birth of the baby, via phone support, breastfeeding support group, and community events

6) Consultant collaborates with the Nurse Lactation Consultant and Nursing Management in all aspects of the Lactation Consultant Program.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Experience:

  • One or more years as a Lactation Consultant

  • Three or more years working with mothers and infants

  • CPR (Required)

Background: The Mass. PPD Fund is a state-based nonprofit working to increase communities’ capacity to address postpartum depression and other Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) through education, training, and advocacy. Some of our projects include scholarship programs in partnership with Postpartum Support International (PSI), GPS Group Peer Support, the MGH Center for Women’s Mental Health and other leading groups; our Amplifying blog of survivors’ stories; and advocating for better state policies on perinatal mental health including as a Steering Committee member of the Massachusetts Mind the Gap Coalition. Role: The Fund is seeking a team member to support new initiatives in training and communications, as part of the Mass. PPD Fund’s strategic plan. As a small nonprofit, the Training and Communications Manager would also assist with some administrative and outreach duties. This is a half-time, hybrid role.

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Professional background in perinatal mental health and/or maternal health and/or lived experience.

• Communications and social media skills/experience. • Training and/or event planning experience.

• Strong organizational and project management skills.

• Strong commitment to DEIAB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access & Belonging) and historically marginalized and vulnerable communities.

• Strong written and oral communication skills. • Collaborative and flexible, with strong people skills.

Manager of Perinatal and Maternal Health Policy -Mass Health

Description:

MassHealth is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Manager, Perinatal and Maternal Health Policy. The Manager, Perinatal and Maternal Health Policy will play an instrumental role in ensuring successful implementation of the MassHealth Doula Services Program with a specific focus on doula community and stakeholder engagement. The Manager, Perinatal and Maternal Health Policy will also support MassHealth to achieve its overarching perinatal and maternal health strategic vision and mission to improve the health outcomes of our diverse pregnant and birthing members and their infants by providing equitable access to high quality health care services and supports.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): 

  • Conduct outreach and serve as a liaison between MassHealth and the doula community (including prospective MassHealth doulas and current MassHealth doulas) related to the MassHealth Doula Services Program, including providing hands-on support to doulas in navigating the MassHealth Doula Services Program.

  • Provide subject matter expertise and guidance to the Senior Manager, Perinatal and Maternal Health Policy as well as members of the MassHealth Parent, Child, and Family Policy team and other teams as appropriate to ensure successful implementation of the MassHealth Doula Services Program, including escalating issues or questions that arise in liaising with the doula community and other stakeholders, such as the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH).

  • Support the Senior Manager, Perinatal and Maternal Health Policy with additional perinatal and maternal health initiatives as needed.

 

Preferred Qualifications:                   

  • Three or more years of experience working as a practicing doula and/or working with doulas in some capacity, including familiarity with the landscape of doula care in Massachusetts

  • Commitment to health equity and improving perinatal and maternal health

  • Native or bilingual proficiency in Spanish

  • Strong communication and organizational skills, professionalism, and attention to detail

  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with diverse stakeholder groups

  • Three or more years working in a health care, public health, or Medicaid setting preferred

  • Three or more years of experience working on maternal and perinatal health projects or policy preferred

Job Summary:

The Lactation Consultant is a health care professional who is knowledgeable, skilled and experienced in lactation and breastfeeding management. The primary focus of this position is to provide education, assistance, and support to breastfeeding women and newborns.  The Lactation Consultant will also provide education to the perinatal nurses who will be caring for maternity patients. 

The Lactation Consultant will provide education within the scope of the Childbirth Education Program as well as continued consultation to patients who are in need of services post-discharge.

The Lactation Consultant will be responsible for creating policies and procedures within the scope of Breastfeeding.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care in a variety of patient care situations

  • Establishment and implementation of Breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to staff

  • Training and education of all staff in the skills necessary to implement breastfeeding policy

  • Maintains and expands knowledge and skills for lactation consultant practice by participating in continuing education programs and professional development activities

  • Interface with Childbirth Educators to educate consistently and comprehensively on breastfeeding issues

  • Establishment of an employee breastfeeding program so that employees returning to work may continue breastfeeding

  • Follow-up with breastfeeding patients as appropriate – availability as a referral source for NWH

  • Referral and communication to primary care provider as appropriate.

 

Qualifications: 

 

  • Current Licensure in nursing in Massachusetts

  • IBCLC Certification

  • NICU lactation experience required

  • Demonstrated, successful teaching experience

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Knowledge of Business Administration Preferred

  • BSN preferred

  • Recent OB or Mother/Baby nursing experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of the special needs and behaviors of infant, child, adolescent, adult patients required.

  • CPR Training Required

  • Screen potential breastmilk donors according to guidelines from multiple agencies.  (Screening includes phone interview, faxes to care providers, facilitating blood tests, keeping process moving and regularly reviewing files)

  • Participate in educational and community events for perinatal providers and parents

Work Arrangements: We are in Newton, MA and provide an essential service. Staff either work FT in person or have a hybrid work model of some hours in person and some remote. FT hours are flexible. 

This role involves sitting/standing at a desk for most of the time, using a computer, mouse, telephone, and making notes in paper files.  Coordinator regularly operates office equipment such as a copier and fax machine. Regular movement throughout the office to use office equipment and work collaboratively.  They communicate or share information with co-workers and donors in person, electronically or by phone.
