Health Science Pre-Requisites

To become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), applicants must complete 14 specific health science subjects (or be on the Recognized Health Professions List) from an accredited institution. Required subjects include human anatomy, physiology, biology, nutrition, child growth/development, and clinical research. Additionally, requirements include psychology, sociology/cultural sensitivity, and various medical safety topics. Recognized Health Professionals: Nurses, midwives, doctors, and dietitians are generally exempt from these 14 courses, though they must still meet lactation-specific education and clinical hours.

Required Health Science Subjects (14 total)
Courses must be taken at an accredited college/university with a passing grade.

  • Biology

  • Human Anatomy

  • Human Physiology

  • Infant and Child Growth and Development

  • Introduction to Clinical Research

  • Nutrition

  • Psychology (or counseling skills or communication skills)

  • Sociology (or cultural sensitivity or cultural anthropology)

Additional Required Topics

  • Medical Terminology

  • Basic Life Support (e.g., CPR/NPR)

  • Medical Documentation

  • Occupational Safety and Security for Health Professionals
